No Guilt. No Judgment. Just Science — and a Plan That Works for You.

Before we go any further, I want to say something clearly:

Formula feeding is a valid, loving, and completely legitimate choice. Formula fed babies thrive. Full stop.

Moms choose formula for many reasons — medical, personal, emotional, or circumstantial. Some moms tried to breastfeed and couldn’t. Some chose not to from the start. Some, like me, had their breastfeeding journey end in a way they never expected.

Whatever your reason — it is yours. And it is enough. This blog is a judgment-free zone and always will be.

The Good News About Fat Loss When Formula Feeding

Here is something the internet rarely tells formula feeding moms: your fat loss journey is actually more straightforward than a breastfeeding mom’s.

When you are breastfeeding, your body holds onto fat as a protective mechanism for milk supply. Hormones like prolactin actively resist fat loss. This is not a flaw — it is biology protecting your baby.

When you are formula feeding, those hormonal constraints are not present in the same way. Your body is still postpartum and still recovering — but it is not holding onto fat reserves for milk production. This means:

→  You can work in a slightly larger calorie deficit safely

→  Your fat loss progress may be more consistent and visible

→  You have more flexibility with your nutrition approach

→  Your hormones will stabilize faster without the breastfeeding hormonal influence

This does not mean crash dieting. It means you have more room to work with — and we use that room wisely.

Your Nutrition Plan as a Formula Feeding Mom

The foundations are the same as any postpartum mom — but with more flexibility:

Calorie Deficit

Start with a 200–300 calorie deficit — slightly more than a breastfeeding mom’s 100 calorie starting point. This is still conservative enough to preserve muscle and energy while creating real, consistent progress.

Protein — Non-Negotiable

Aim for 2g of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. Your body is still recovering from birth and needs protein to rebuild, preserve muscle, and keep your energy stable. This rule does not change regardless of how you are feeding your baby.

Postpartum Recovery First

Whether you had a vaginal birth or C-section, your body needs to heal first. Start with core and pelvic floor rehab before any high-intensity training. 20–30 minutes at home is all you need to start.

Stop Explaining Your Choice to Anyone

This is the part I feel most strongly about.

Formula feeding moms are often made to feel like they owe the world an explanation. Like they failed at something. Like they made the wrong choice.

You did not fail. You made a decision for your baby and your family — and that decision deserves respect, not scrutiny.

Formula fed babies thrive. They grow. They are loved. And a mom who is mentally and physically healthy — regardless of how she feeds her baby — is a better mom.

At Riv Method, we do not have a preferred feeding method. We have a preferred outcome: a healthy, strong, thriving mom.

What Matters Most Right Now

Whether you chose formula from day one, switched from breastfeeding, or had no choice in the matter — the path forward is the same:

→  Eat enough protein to support your recovery and muscle

→  Work in a moderate calorie deficit — not aggressive, not extreme

→  Start moving — even 10 minutes a day builds the habit

→  Prioritize sleep as much as a new mom possibly can

→  Be patient with your body — it just did something extraordinary

You are not behind. You are not doing it wrong. You are a mom who is figuring it out — and that is exactly enough.
